Accused of acting against national security – Espionage

It has been 120 days since three American hikers were detained in Iran.

The trio reportedly crossed over to Iran during a hiking trip near Kurdistan Iraq.

The Iranian government has accused them of espionage.

It has been 166 days since Yaghoghil Shaolian was detained in Iran, a member of Iran’s Jewish community, was not an activist, did not join the protests, but got caught up in the moment and threw some stones at a Tehran bank branch, in central Tehran on June 14, 2009, during unrests after June 12 presidential election in Iran.

Yaghoghil was arrested, accused of acting against national security – Espionage, resulting in his conviction and was sentenced to two and half years in prison.

An international effort is seeking more information about the FOUR defendants, and will raise concerns with the Iranian authorities, since those convicted and sentenced appear to have been denied a fair trial. 

The Iranian government has accused them of espionage.

Briton sailor David Bloomer held captive by Iran

Five British sailors are being held captive in Iran after they strayed into the country’s territorial waters on their way to an international yacht race.

The U.K. government said Iran is holding five British nationals, after their yacht possibly strayed into Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf last week.

The Iranian navy on Nov. 25 stopped the yacht, which was sailing to Dubai from Bahrain, and taken the crewmembers into custody, the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The newly refitted vessel was making its way from Bahrain to Dubai for a 350-mile race to Muscat, which began on Thursday.

The sailors, who “may have strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters,” remain in Iran, are safe and well, according to the statement. Their families have been kept informed.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband said officials are in touch with Iranian authorities to “seek clarification, and to try and resolve the matter swiftly.”

The incident comes as the U.S., Britain, and other European allies condemn Iran’s plan to expand its nuclear program in defiance of United Nations sanctions. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not made an official statement on the matter, state-run Press TV reported on its Web site.  

Miliband is attempting to resolve the latest matter quietly. His talks with Iranian officials may have been delayed because of the Islamic holiday of Eid Al Adha.

The boat belongs to Sail Bahrain, the Foreign Office said, and a project, which aims to develop sailing and other water sports in the Persian Gulf nation. The British Broadcasting Corp. identified the sailors as Luke Porter, Oliver (Olly) Smith, David Bloomer, Oliver Young and Sam Usher.

There were concerns that the crew would be accused of spying by the Iranian authorities who have long suspected Britain of trying to undermine their regime.

Last month, Iran accused three American hikers who were taken into custody in July while trekking on the Iran-Iraq border of espionage. Their families have denied the allegations.
